Although I’ve always been opposed to companies trying to monopolize markets, but Google has coursed me into trying there full spectrum of programs… This all started while looking for an adequate picture management program. I used to use lightroom, but it lacks user interactivity and simplicity. Today I installed Google Picasa. I had preconceived notions of disappointment, but after the installation I was actually a little impressed. While adding my collection consisting of literally thousands of pictures, I was asked a surprising question… I picture popped up asking who owned the face in said picture, after adding everyone a few times, the program began recognising them and automatically adding them to categories titled by their names. I do have to say, this is a feature I haven’t run across before. If you look through the gallery, you’ll notice there are 4 pictures labeled one through four.
Clicking on any name in the side bar will bring up
any pictures with them in it and show a close up of their face.
Choose any picture and click the “people” button on the
bottom right to bring up a list of everyone in that photo.
Double click on the picture and you’ll see the actual photo, and the same list of everyone that’s in it.
You can also manually add people. The tagging system is similar to that in facebook or myspace,
except after you tag someone that has never been tagged again, the program looks through you
library trying to find more pictures with that person in it. Don’t worry, this is all in the background only using idle processes.
Go back out to the gallery and click on the “places” button in the bottom right corner, then choose any
photo that has a little red “pin” in the corner of the picture and see a map on the right side with the
location the picture was taken. Most new phones and some new cameras have native support for
geo-tagging. You can also manually add a geo-tag to any picture or video.
